Time to move out and get your first apartment?

Getting your first apartment is major decision and major step in life. This is one step in adulthood that definitely means lots more freedom. Your apartment means your rules. It means coming and going when you please. Before just jumping on the first chance to leave mom and dad though, my advice is to once again sit down and think things through. Having your own apartment means having your own bills that you might not had to have paid before. You're going to have to make up a budget. You're now going to have bills such as;

  • Rent (of course)

  • Heat

  • Electricity

  • Food (now this means both groceries and cooking the meals yourself. It could also mean more take out if you don't always like to cook)

  • Television

  • Internet

  • Phone

  • Cell phone

  • Furniture and Appliances (tv, vacuum, microwave, refrigerator, washer and dryer)

  • Toiletries and other miscellaneous expenditures (cleaning agents, toilet paper, paper towels, soap etc.)

  • Laundry

Now of course maybe you can cut out one or more of these things, but most of them you can't and every one of them cost money. So my advice is as long as mom or dad aren't pushing to get rid of you stay at home a little while longer while you can. If you've got extra money take advantage of living at home and bank that money or pay a little rent at home and help out mom and dad.

You're most likely scenario when moving out is moving in with a roommate or a boyfriend/girlfriend. There is probably no greater way to learn about someone from living with them. Are they neat? Are they responsible? Do they have irritating little quirks that drive you crazy? If you live with someone you'll find out the answers to those questions soon enough. Nothing can ruin in a relationship faster sometimes then money. Remember that many people are looking to do what's best for them. What if you rent an apartment with a friend and then they decide they want to move out and move back home or with there boyfriend/girlfriend? Are you going be okay paying 100 percent of the bills until another roommate can be found?

If you can't pay the bills then you can find yourself getting in debt pretty fast. If you don't pay the bills and they go to collection agencies you could kill your credit for a long time. Then anything else from buying a house to buying a car could cost you lot more in the future. If your credit becomes less than good, you may be forced to pay higher interest on loans in the future and have little choice but to pay. Why rush a big decision you might be able to avoid if your parents aren't rushing you out. Just cause you don't have many bills don't go out and buy expensive rims or a sound system for you car. Don't blow all your money on a new gaming system or stereo you probably don't need. Start getting that bank account up so when its really time to move out you'll be ready.
